White Reflective Roof Coating vs No Coating: 12% more generation in a side-by-side test

We compared two 3.72 kWp bifacial plants on the same street in a Bengaluru villa community, with the same panels, inverter and mounting height. One sits above a roof with a white reflective coating, the other above an uncoated roof. Here is the measured data, and what it does and doesn't show.

Data period: 1–26 October 2026 · Updated 27 October 2026 · Source: inverter monitoring app exports

The short answer

Between 1 and 26 October 2026, the plant above the white reflective coating generated 481.3 kWh and the plant above the uncoated roof 428.7 kWh: 12% more, and higher on all 26 days, by 11% to 14%. The two roofs also differ in the surface beneath the coating (tiles against shingles), so the gain is not purely the coating.

Per-kWp figures use 6 panels × 620 Wp = 3.72 kWp for each plant. At ₹7 per unit, the extra 52.6 kWh is worth about ₹368 if used at home.

How the two plants were set up

Both homes are new plants, about two months old, in the same villa community on Bannerghatta Road and on the same street. Neither had been cleaned at the time of measurement. The highlighted rows are where the plants differ.

The results

The two plants rise and fall together day by day, including the cloudier days on 16 and 18 October and 22–25 October, which shows they experienced the same weather. The coated plant was higher on all 26 days, by between 11% and 14% (median 12%).

Hour by hour, 10 October

On 10 October we have 5-minute power data for both plants. The coated plant was ahead in every hour, by about 9–10% around midday, and by more in the early morning and late afternoon (up to about 20%), when the sun is lower. Over the day the gain was 12%, in line with the month. Peak power was about 3.31 kW for the coated plant and 3.05 kW for the uncoated plant.

What this does and doesn't show

Two things differ between the plants

  • Coating: a white reflective coating sends more light back up to the rear side of bifacial panels, and may also keep the roof cooler.
  • Surface beneath: the uncoated roof has shingles on the slab and the coated roof has tiles. We cannot separate this from the coating itself.

We did not measure panel temperature or the light reaching the rear of the panels, so we cannot say how much of the gain comes from each mechanism.

Limits of the data

  • The daily data covers 26 days in one month; the hour-by-hour view covers one day. Other months may give different results.
  • It compares two real homes, not a laboratory test. Both plants are new and had not been cleaned.
  • We tested one coating product at one thickness and area, and one mounting height (about 2 ft).
  • The figures come from the inverter monitoring app, which may differ slightly from the utility meter.

We will update this page as more months of data come in.

What this means for your roof

For a bifacial system above a roof you can coat, a reflective coating is a way to increase output without adding panels. Whether it pays depends on your roof, the area to coat, the coating cost and how much of your generation you use at home. The extra 52.6 kWh here is about ₹370 over 26 days at ₹7 a unit, so compare that with the cost to coat your own roof.

Our separate raised vs flush mount study looks at mounting height. We have not yet tested a raised structure and a reflective coating together, so don't add the two gains. To size the system itself, see our guide to choosing solar capacity.

Questions people ask

Does a white reflective roof coating increase solar generation with bifacial panels?
In our side-by-side comparison, yes. The plant on a reflective-coated roof generated 481.3 kWh against 428.7 kWh for the plant on an uncoated roof in October 2026, 12% more, and was higher on all 26 days (by 11% to 14%). The roof surfaces also differed in what lies beneath the coating, so the result is not purely the coating.
Is the gain only because of the coating?
Not entirely. The unpainted roof is a concrete slab topped with shingles, while the coated roof is a concrete slab with tiles, with the coating applied on top of the tiles. We cannot separate the effect of the tile-versus-shingle surface from the coating, or any effect of a cooler roof on the panels, with this data.
When in the day is the gain largest?
On 10 October, the coated plant was ahead in every hour, by about 9–10% around midday and by more in the early morning and late afternoon, up to about 20%. This is one day of 5-minute data.
Which coating was used?
A white high-albedo reflective roof coating, Lumincoat Reflecton, applied over an area of about 11 ft by 20 ft under and around the panels. Product details are on the manufacturer's page. We have not tested other products.
Will the gain last?
We don't know yet. The plants were about two months old and had not been cleaned. Dust, ageing of the coating and the season could change the gain. We plan to update this page as more months of data come in.
Does this work with a flush-mounted system?
We haven't tested that. In this study both plants were mounted parallel to the roof about 2 ft above it. Our separate raised vs flush mount study looked at mounting height, using ordinary white paint, not a reflective coating, and we have not yet tested a raised structure and a reflective coating together.
Should I coat my roof?
It depends on your roof, the coating cost and the area to cover. The extra generation here was about 52.6 kWh over 26 days for a 3.72 kWp system, worth about ₹370 at ₹7 a unit if used at home.
